Kansas City 2014

Becky and I took a February trip to Kansas City. I kept track of what we did, ate, explored, etc. via a few applications including Moves for the iPhone and my Jawbone UP24.

Friday, February 14

  • We left at around 4:00 PM. I picked Becky up from work and we arrived in town at 9:00. We walked to the Westport district from our hotel (the lovely Best Western Plus Seville Plaza) and got great burgers at Beer Kitchen. Then we walked back home for the night. Happy Valentine's Day!

Saturday, February 15

  • We woke up and took advantage of the hotel's hot and continental breakfast options. I had an instant oatmeal and Becky ate eggs, sausage, monkey bread, etc. We drove to Boulevard Brewing and took a tour at 10:45 where we got to sample many of Boulevard's beers: Unfiltered Wheat, Pop-Up IPA, Single-Wide IPA, Tank 7, KC Pils, and a special Test ESB only available in the testing room.

  • Afterwards, we drove to Hammerpress, a custom letterpress and sign shop. Becky bought some cards for different upcoming occasions.

  • We went back to the hotel. I took off for a 13 mile run up Main Street to the Riverfront Heritage Trail and Back. Becky visited the World War I museum and memorial.

  • After we both recovered, we took a trip to the Plaza district for barbecue but were turned off by the long line at Jack Stack's. Instead we drove the ten minutes to Oklahoma Joe's and waited in a long, long line for barbecue. We got pulled pork and beef brisket sandwiches with a side of onion rings. Definitely worth the wait.

  • We decided barbecue wasn't enough for us so we drove to GlacĂ© Artisan Ice Cream, where I had a two-scoop cup of cream cheese and fleur de sel caramel flavored ice cream.

Sunday, February 16

  • We woke up -- more hotel breakfast -- and drove to the Kansas City Scout statue for a great view of the skyline. We then hit up Quay Coffee for a bit of caffeine (unfortunately, I forget what I had brewed for me). A quick walk down the street and we were at the River Market, which reminded me a lot of the market in Soulard here in St. Louis.

  • Afterwards, Becky wanted to step her foot into Kansas, so I picked a random spot on a map and we drove there. It ended up being a serendipitous choice: Kaw Point, where we ended up, overlooks the confluence of the Missouri and Kansas Rivers. It offered a great view.

  • Next was a stop to the famous Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. You could spend many, many days at this place but a few hours is all we had. My favorite was Rodin's "Study of a Seated Man," which was basically a mirror image of myself.

  • We finally got our Jack Stack's after that, but at a different (the original?) location. The order was two chopped burnt ends sandwiches and fries.

  • Dinner let out at around 4:00 PM and we made it back in decent time. We detoured to welcome ourselves back to St. Louis with a Ted Drewes cherry pie concrete in honor of Presidents' Day.

  • Safe and sound at home by 9:30 PM!
